The fabric determines everything: particle shedding, autoclave life, chemical resistance, operator comfort. This guide compares the four dominant cleanroom garment materials across all dimensions that matter to procurement, QA, and facility managers.

Continuous-Filament Polyester — The GMP Standard

Continuous-filament polyester is the default material for GMP pharmaceutical and biotech cleanroom garments. Its defining characteristic is the filament structure: each fiber is a single continuous strand, not a bundle of shorter staple fibers twisted together. This means there are no cut fiber ends to break off and become airborne particles.

Why it dominates GMP: (1) Lowest particle shedding among reusable materials. (2) Autoclave-compatible at standard parameters (121-134 deg C). (3) Good chemical resistance to common cleanroom disinfectants. (4) Lightweight and breathable — operators can wear it for full shifts. (5) Long service life — 50-100+ cycles with proper inspection and handling.

When not to use: Environments requiring ESD control (use carbon-blend variant), chemical handling with aggressive solvents (consider Tyvek), or single-use disposable applications (consider PP or SMS).

Polypropylene (PP) — The Disposable Workhorse

Polypropylene is the most common material for disposable cleanroom garments. It is a thermoplastic polymer that can be spun into nonwoven fabrics at relatively low cost. PP garments are single-use — worn once and discarded.

Best use cases: Grade D cleanrooms, visitor gowning, R&D labs, pilot plants, maintenance personnel. PP garments are practical where operator volume is low or irregular, where laundry infrastructure is absent, or where the contamination risk does not justify the cost of a reusable program.

Limitations: Cannot be autoclaved (degrades at sterilization temperatures). Moderate particle shedding compared to polyester. Limited chemical resistance to strong oxidizers. Not available in ESD versions.

SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) — The Breathable Barrier

SMS is a three-layer nonwoven laminate: two outer spunbond polypropylene layers with a meltblown polypropylene filtration layer in the middle. The meltblown layer provides a barrier against particles and fluids while the spunbond layers provide strength and abrasion resistance.

Best use cases: Disposable lab coats, visitor gowning, Grade D cleanroom entry where a higher barrier than standard PP is desired. SMS garments are commonly used in healthcare and pharmaceutical support areas where fluid resistance matters.

Limitations: Higher cost than standard PP. Not autoclavable. Particle shedding is medium-high compared to polyester. The three-layer construction is thicker and warmer than single-layer PP, which may reduce operator comfort during long wear sessions.

Tyvek (Flash-Spun HDPE) — Chemical and Particulate Protection

Tyvek is a flash-spun high-density polyethylene material manufactured by DuPont. Its structure — continuous HDPE fibers bonded by heat and pressure — creates a material that is extremely resistant to particles, chemicals, and liquids while remaining lightweight.

Best use cases: Hazardous drug compounding (USP 800), chemical handling, semiconductor cleanrooms where chemical exposure is a concern, and applications requiring both particle and chemical protection. Tyvek’s chemical resistance is unmatched among cleanroom garment materials.

Limitations: Non-breathable — operators can overheat during extended wear. Not autoclavable (polyethylene-based). Higher unit cost than PP or SMS disposables. Limited sizing and style options compared to polyester.

Material Selection Decision Flow

Start with your cleanroom grade: Grade A/B/C → Continuous-filament polyester (autoclavable). Grade D → Polyester, PP, or SMS depending on volume and laundry capability.

Then check special requirements: ESD control needed → Polyester-carbon blend. Chemical exposure → Tyvek if disposable, verify polyester compatibility if reusable. Visitor or low volume → PP or SMS disposable. High daily volume → Polyester reusable for cost optimization.

Verify with your sterilization method: Autoclave → Polyester only. Gamma → Polyester, PP, SMS, or Tyvek (supplier-sterilized). No sterilization → PP or SMS for non-sterile applications.

Garment Materials FAQ

Which material is best for GMP Grade B garments?

Continuous-filament polyester. It provides the lowest particle shedding among reusable materials, is autoclave-compatible at 121-134 deg C, resists common cleanroom disinfectants, and is comfortable for extended wear. Grade B garments must be sterile.

Can polypropylene garments be autoclaved?

No. Polypropylene softens and deforms at autoclave temperatures (121-134 deg C). PP garments are designed for single use and disposal. If you need reusable garments, choose continuous-filament polyester.

When should I choose Tyvek over polyester?

Choose Tyvek when you need superior chemical resistance (hazardous drug compounding, aggressive solvents) or when you need a disposable garment with low particle shedding but cannot use polyester due to the lack of laundry infrastructure. Tyvek is also preferred for applications requiring both chemical and particulate protection.

What is the difference between SMS and standard polypropylene?

SMS has a meltblown middle layer that provides a barrier against particles and fluids. Standard PP is a single-layer spunbond with no barrier layer. SMS offers better protection at a higher cost. Choose SMS when fluid or particle barrier matters; choose PP for basic contamination control.
